The Girl Gotta Hike Public Transit Series is a once-monthly guided hike that is easily accessed by subway, train or bus from New York City. Get out of the city and into the woods without needing a car!

Distance:  6.5 mile loop hike

Rating:  Easy to Moderate (easy rolling terrain, but weather conditions & length may be challenging for non-regular hikers)

Hike Description: A perennial favorite, South Mountain Reservation is one of Girl Gotta Hike’s top local destinations — especially in the winter months when the daylight is short but we still want to get out and hike! Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead & sons and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s, South Mountain Reservation is a 2100+ acre nature preserve in Millburn, New Jersey. While it may be just a 45-minute train ride from midtown Manhattan, South Mountain Reservation offers a level of peace and serenity more associated with rural landscapes than busy suburbs. We’ll explore its quiet, rolling hills, waterfalls, and city views, and even end our trip with a visit to the fairy trail, full of magic houses! Time permitting, we can warm up with a snack or brew of choice from a local cafe or bar before hopping the train back to NYC.

Each trip will run with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 in order to ensure the health and safety of all guides and participants. If the minimum has not been met 24 hours ahead of trip, we will reach out and reschedule, refund, or make alternate arrangements. Liability Waiver and COVID-19 Policy must be completed ahead of hike in order to participate.

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel 14 days or more prior to the start of your trip, you will receive a full refund, less a 10% non-refundable administration fee. If you cancel between 24 hours and 14 days ahead, you will receive a 50% refund. Anything less than 24-hours is ineligible for refund, unless trip is canceled by Girl Gotta Hike, due to dangerous conditions or any other reason.
